PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew was activated yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 11 September) following reports of an injured woman after a fall on the Robberg Nature Reserve hiking trail.
The NSRI medical crew responded by road and hiked to the scene to join Plettenberg Bay Nature Conservation officers who had also responded. Sea rescue crafts were launched to respond to the sea-side of Robberg Nature Reserve.
MCSA (Mountain Club of South Africa) medics also responded to assist.
The woman, from Israel, on holiday in Plettenberg Bay and hiking with her husband and son, was found on The Wild Side of The Point. She had sustained a laceration above her eye and right arm and right shoulder - injuries from an approximately 3-meter fall from a ledge on the hiking trail.
The AMS/EMS Skymed rescue helicopter was placed on alert and following medical treatment on the scene, the crews immobilised and secured the patient to trauma board as a precaution. With the patient in a stable condition and in good spirits, it was decided to transport her to the sea rescue base aboard the sea rescue craft Ray Farnham.
A Med-Life ambulance then transported her to hospital in a stable condition.
NSRI thanks the fellow hikers that stopped to help, Plettenberg Bay Nature Conservation officers, MSC medics, Med-Life ambulance services for their assistance and the Skymed rescue helicopter that was ready to assist if required.
The husband and their son hiked out of the reserve with the rescue crew and were reunited with the woman in hospital.
