KNYSNA NEWS - Earlier this week, the DA in Knysna conducted an oversight visit to the waste transfer station in the town's CBD, revealing that nine of the twelve waste trucks responsible for waste collection are out of service, leaving only three operational trucks to serve all 11 wards.
This has led to logistical and maintenance issues at the transfer station, hindering the timely collection and transportation of waste to the designated PetroSA landfill site in Mossel Bay.
A plea for improved monitoring and action to resolve the Knysna waste management crisis has been emphasised as the growing backlog of uncollected refuse has surpassed the two-week mark in certain areas.
Frustrated and desperate residents have since resorted to illegal dumping and burning waste in the streets, posing significant health hazards to community members and tourists.
The community in Knysna is calling for immediate action to address the waste management crisis, demanding solutions, proactive problem solving, and transparent communication.
The proposed measures include urgent repair and restoration plans for nine non-operational waste trucks, maintenance issues at the transfer station, comprehensive initiatives to combat illegal dumping, clear timelines for resolving the crisis, and improved communication and transparency from the municipality regarding waste management updates.
