PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Following an increase in reported burglaries in Plettenberg Bay over the past few days, local crime fighters have warned residents and visitors to ensure that relaxing over the holiday period does not trump safety.
Lisa Nagel from Plett.Watch, the local neighbourhood watch group, said the increase in burglaries and intruders on properties was more prominent in the lower Plettenberg Bay area.
"These criminals take advantage of holiday times when people are unfamiliar with the area and are relaxed and in holiday mood," Nagel said.
They had also noticed a pattern where criminals go on a "spree", targeting several properties along their "route". "They scout during the day, checking out vulnerable and easily accessible properties, open windows or other access points."
Nagel warned residents and visitors to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious noises and activity, including dogs barking.
"Make certain your alarm is activated whenever you leave your property, and if you can activate unoccupied zones and beams while at home, please do so. Close windows not protected by burglar bars and ensure all safety gates are locked."
She also warned residents and visitors not to leave anything of value outside, or inside near open windows where they can be "fished" out, as this encourages theft.
Make sure your car is parked behind closed gates or in your garage and remove all items of value.
She also urged residents and visitors to keep their panic buttons close at hand and use it if necessary.
"If you suspect someone is in your property, turn on all your lights, outside and inside, press your panic button and make sure all your doors are securely locked."
Nagel also urged homeowners to check their electric gates and garage doors during and after load shedding. "Occasionally they open when the power goes off or on. If you see an open gate that is not usually open, please report it immediately."
