KNYSNA NEWS – An avid cyclist from Johannesburg, Vusi Sindayi, has been on a cycling tour from Musina to Cape Town to raise funds for 10 000 school shoes. The tour started on 13 April and ended on 23 May.
Sindayi works in partnership with the company Barefoot No More that recycles plastic and turns them into school shoes. In turn, Vusi has been collecting donations from donors all around the country to help 10 000 schoolchildren receive pairs of school shoes.
It took him 37 days to complete the 3 257km cycling tour through the length of the country.
On 18 May, Sindayi reached the scenic Garden Route. "The Garden Route was spectacular," he says. Although he was delayed by the heavy rainfall in the area last week, he persisted on his journey. He was hosted by the Tsitsikamma Nature Reserve and had the opportunity to enjoy the scenery.
Sindayi was introduced to cycling by his uncle and immediately became an enthusiast. The idea to do a trip from Musina to Cape Town came to him in 2017, when he read a documentary by Mark Beaumont who had cycled from Cairo to Cape Town. This inspired him to start his own cycling journey for a good cause.
It has been a multi-layered journey for Sindayi. On the road he was faced with a number of physical, logistical and mental challenges that he had to overcome in order to meet his goals.
"It has been a matter of conquering the mind and the body and letting that motivate you in your goal," says Sindayi.
His main goal on this journey was to bring inspiration to children. He also aimed at connecting with people on their own personal journeys and motivating them. He further aims to help more people in the future by working with communities and forming meaningful partnerships.
He has currently raised the amount needed for 1 000 pairs of school shoes and will continue in his efforts of reaching his goal of providing school shoes for 10 000 learners.
