GARDEN ROUTE NEWS - For the 26th consecutive year, the Voortrekkers youth organisation held its annual "Swartvlei Seekamp" (sea camp) at the Swartvlei Caravan Park from 16 to 22 June, once again bringing hundreds of young Voortrekkers down to the Southern Cape.
The Swartvlei Seekamp was launched in 1993, and for the past 26 years young Voortrekkers in Grade 7 and lower have been making the trek to Sedgefield from Gauteng.
The camp isn't simply a "free-for-all, let's have a jolly good time" kind of camp however, said camp leader Tekkies Kotze, as the young Voortrekkers are taught all about the environment while doing their bit to keep the area up and down the beach at Swartvlei clean, and they help separate waste and rubbish during their time at camp, to allow for easier recycling.
The 400 to 500 boys and girls who make the trek each year also carry out some community service in the process.
