KNYSNA NEWS - Search and rescue efforts to find missing 58-year-old cyclist Alan Broderick continue today, with various law enforcement and rescue entities combing the Knysna forests.
The search and rescue teams gathered at the Knysna Police Station this morning before they were dispatched to the Diepwalle Forest Hut, where they met with volunteers that were to take part in the search.
"The team, Knysna police, Tsitsikamma K9, Western Cape EMS search and rescue, pathology services, Wilderness search and rescue, community police forum members and community volunteers, continued with the operation on Monday 5 December," said Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies.
The search party was activated yesterday, Sunday 4 December, after Broderick was reported as missing having left from the Diepwalle Forest Hut on Saturday 3 December and not returning to Plettenberg Bay by 14:00, the time he was expected to be back.
According to a social media post sent out by Broderick's family he was last seen wearing cycling shoes, orange top and black shorts, black helmet and sunglasses. He was riding a black and blue Giant branded mountain bike. Broderick is described as being 1,9m tall and 92kg.
"We appeal to anyone cycling or hiking between Harkerville, the Garden of Eden and Diepwalle to please keep a look out for Alan. He has been missing for more than 24 hours," the family said in the social media post.
Anyone with information can contact Gail on 083 565 0461 or Lara on 081 029 0229. Please keep trying if you don’t get through at first, as there is very little signal in the forest.
Spies said that WO James Visagie, the investigation officer, urged the public to come forward with any information which could ensure the safe return of the 58-year-old man.
Anyone with information may contact the Knysna Police on 044 302 6677 or Crime Stop in 08600 10111.
