Update
KNYSNA NEWS – While major accidents such as last week's are not all too common at the N2/George Rex Drive intersection, the intersection still causes notable issues for motorists.
Over the years this has led to calls to improve the road infrastructure of that section of the N2.
There have been calls for solutions such as traffic lights or a traffic circle/roundabout, but according to Knysna Municipality spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhoudt, no option is financially viable.
"The municipality has had several studies done in the past. However, at the time it was not financially feasible. We have also approached the province - without success. With limited funds for road infrastructure, other key roads receive priority," he said.
In other efforts to improve traffic management, the municipality installed speed cameras at the N2/Old Toll Road intersection just up the road. The cameras are meant to help curb speeding through the area, as well as to monitor and curb the number of motorists skipping red lights at the intersection.
While he could not confirm the efficacy of these particular cameras, Bezuidenhoudt did comment on cameras in general.
"We generally have found that where speed cameras have been installed, they are an effective intervention in reducing speed and collisions," he said.
With the N2 being a national road, part of the responsibility does fall on the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) to improve the road infrastructure.
However, the N2/George Rex Drive intersection is not part of the Sanral network, but is in the care of Knysna Municipality.
