KNYSNA NEWS - Stepping Stones Pre-Primary School celebrates its 46th birthday this year. Apart from contributing to children at various early childhood development facilities over the years, Stepping Stones has also "birthed" an offspring, Riverwood Primary, which shares the same campus.
Riverwood has inherited its strong values and traditions from Stepping Stones and has proudly built on the legacy set by its older sister school.
Riverwood principal Carrene Sands congratulates and thanks Stepping Stones on this big occasion.
"A sense of community has always been part of our school and we believe that it is important for our children and families to be involved in our various outreach projects," she says.
"We are thankful to our children, families and teachers who make the effort to give in order to demonstrate kindness and caring to others."
She particularly thanks Susan Davies for her coordinating work. "For Easter our children enjoyed designing the unique wrappings and cards that went with the Easter egg donations. It gave them joy and a sense of pride to be able to do something special to brighten another child's or elderly neighbour's day."
Sands says the two schools, supported by the Knysna Education Trust (Ket), Rainbow of Hope Day Care and Nolene's Soup Kitchen, also love to recognise their elderly neighbours at Garden Gates. "We enjoy singing and dancing for our 'adopted' grandparents."

The school also supports Babies in Need (Bin) by way of its Grade R Mother's Day tea party, where all children from Grade R to Grade 7 can bring items to help mothers of newborn babies.
Every week, Bin hands out parcels of basic need items to 12 mothers at Knysna Provincial Hospital.
"Mrs Mary-Anne Farnham and her team do a sterling job of collecting and delivering items for Bin," says Sands.
"We continue with our various community outreach projects each term. Our children learn that they can bring joy and assistance to others and that if we all contribute something, no matter how small, it can make a big difference to another person's life."
