KNYSNA NEWS - The National taxi strike that started today, Friday 4 August, is affecting commuters from various parts of the town. Due to the provincial stay-away issued by Santaco Western Cape, no taxis will be operating in Knysna until 9 August, or until their demands are met.
The strike will affect learner transport, staff transport vehicles as well as special taxis.
The strike is affecting workers that travel from Hornlee, Dam-se-Bos, Nekkies and White Location to the Knysna CBD and commuters have been struggling to get to work since 05:00.
Commuters in the Knysna area are unhappy about being stranded without the transport they heavily rely on. The Knysna Taxi Forum has warned commuters to prioritise their own safety during this time.
Regular commuters have been reported saying that many have resorted to walking to work.
There are also accounts of lift club commuters being taken out of their vehicles.
“Santaco is embarking on this protest action due to our demands not being listened to by the Western Cape Government," says chairperson of the Eden Santaco branch, NC Siyona.
"As well as not listening to our demands, we’ve been stopped from legally operating despite having the necessary permits. The protest action was decided upon by all taxi owners and organisations in the area yesterday and will continue until 9 August if demands are not met in the meantime.”
Workers from EPWP are stranded at Lamco petrol station, unable to get to work due to the taxi strike.
