PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - By 2026 the Bitou Municipality aims to ensure that 5 000 local residents, all beneficiaries of government homes, receive their title deeds.
An official from the Department of Human Settlements in the Western Cape, Audrey Reed, said there is a backlog in this regard.
Bitou Speaker Claude Terblanche explained that many residents had received the keys to their homes over the years, but had not receive their title deeds.
The drive to get this done, is part of an initiative to create a sense of ownership among beneficiaries.
In an effort to reach this target, the municipality handed over title deeds to several residents of New Horizons in Ward 4 last week. During the ceremony Terblanche said the municipality want to ensure that 5 000 title deeds are handed over to home owners by 2026.
Bitou Mayor Dave Swart said it always fills him with great joy and excitement to see how excited people are when they receive their keys. He added that handing over title deeds to property owners completed the process for homeowners.
Reed said her office received many enquiries from homeowners about their title deeds. She said the latest title deed hand over is a step in dealing with the backlog.
She said title deeds will be handed to more homeowners in other wards during coming days.
