PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Crime fighters are urging residents to report water running from unoccupied homes. This comes after an incident during which a man was arrested for allegedly stealing copper taps.
Lisa Nagel of Plett.Watch, a local neighbourhood watch group, said an alert Fidelity ADT armed response officer interrupted a suspect on Monday 25 October while he was tampering with copper taps on a property in the Longships area.
The suspect was apprehended and the officer opened a case on behalf of the homeowner, who was not on the property.
"If taps are stolen at unoccupied homes, often the water will run until someone reports it, which can end up costing the homeowner a fortune," Nagel said.
She urged anyone who hears water running continuously from a neighbour's property, or see water running out of the property, to report it immediately.
Nagel praised the security officer for his vigilance.
Items in the suspect's possession suggested that he was truly stealing copper taps.
