PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – Bitou's crime prevention and anti-land invasion units have had a busy few weeks since the start of the year, managing to apprehend several suspected criminals and confiscating dangerous objects and substances.
During operations on Friday night, 13 January and Saturday morning, 14 January, members of the units conducted stop-and-search efforts in Kwanokuthula, New Horizons and Qolweni and confiscated a large number of dangerous weapons, ranging from pangas and knives to hypodermic needles and a replica of a handgun.
Lisa Nagel of Plett.Watch, Bitou's neighbourhood watch group, said that on Saturday morning the team also removed vagrants from the Lookout Beach area.
"A number of these vagrants are known criminals, who commit crimes in the surrounding areas and then go into the thick bush to hide. They set up camp, drag refuse bags into their campsite and strew rubbish all over," Nagel said.
She said they use the nearby bushes as ablution facilities, which not only causes a stench, but also poses a health hazard to those visiting or living in the area.
