PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Stolen boat engines worth R80 000 were recovered and two suspects were arrested on Friday 20 May thanks to the vigilance of Plett crime fighters.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies said that Plettenberg Bay's sector manager and a team of community volunteers conducted patrols on the R340 near Wittedrift.
Just before 22:00, they spotted a Ford Bantam bakkie and as they approached the vehicle, a passenger got out and disappeared into the bushes "under suspicious circumstances".
"They immediately proceeded with a search of the vehicle and found two Yamaha boat engines, valued at R40 000 each, concealed under a cloth. The occupants were unable to account for their possession thereof and were arrested on a charge of possession of the suspected stolen property," Spies said.
Further investigation revealed that the boat engines had been stolen along the banks of the Keurbooms River nearby during the week.
The suspects, aged 30 and 38, were scheduled to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court this week on a charge of possession of the stolen property. The passenger who disappeared into the bushes is yet to be arrested.
On the same night, Rural Flying Squad members deployed in Knysna conducted a search of a house at Concordia, Knysna, after receiving a tip-off.
They found a Gary Fisher bicycle valued at about R10 000 inside. A 28-year-old suspect was arrested on a charge of possession of suspected stolen property.
Further investigation confirmed that the bicycle had been stolen during a burglary in Knysna earlier.
This suspect is also expected to appear in the local magistrate's court this week. All arrested suspects remain in police custody.
