PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Work on the once controversial Qolweni housing project has been progressing steadily since the Bitou Municipality handed it over to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements in June this year.
Western Cape MEC for Human Settlements Tertuis Simmers said since the handover of the R33,5-milion project, a contractor has been appointed and a sod-turning ceremony was held on 30 August.
So far, the foundations of eight units have been dug and they are ready for concrete. Over and above this a project steering committee, with representatives from provincial government, the municipality and concerned groups and beneficiaries from Qolweni, has been established with the assistance of the Bitou Municipality.
“This project is an almost perfect yardstick to show what can be achieved when you have a government that is committed to working for and with its people. We made a commitment to this community and it is clear for all to see that we’re adhering to it,” Simmers said.
