Initially held to assist the late Ross Taylor to cover the costs of his cancer treatment, the event is now held to honour Taylor's wish that it be held annually for "fun and love and to raise money for Hospice".
The first event in 2009 attracted 70 entrants and raised R38 000. The following year, 157 surfers participated and raised R35 000. In 2011 other events were added to the programme which saw 215 entrants and R70 000 raised. With over 300 contestants in last year's event, the surf contest became the largest in Southern Africa. Despite gale force winds and terrible storms on the days of the contest, everything went ahead as planned and R121 000 was raised.
Every year a dedicated team of volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that all the stops are pulled and that the weekend delivers on promises of a magnificent spectacle of surfing, SUP'ing (stand-up paddling), live music, a benefit auction and a wide range of beach activities - fun run/walk to Brenton-on-Sea and back and a sandcastle building competition.
The dedicated support of local businesses, loyal supporters and sponsors further ensures that the event has grown to become a favourite on the Garden Route.
Various categories in the contest cater for all - ladies, men, over 40s, juniors, teens and development surfers. Surfing starts at 08:00 on the Friday and continues to the final heats on the Sunday at 12:00, followed by a prize giving.
This year, the opening day falls on Women's Day, and in celebration of the Women of Worth group, a special music and dance event takes place on the Friday afternoon. The Saturday evening benefit bash will include drumming, fire dancing, an auction of various amazing goodies, a live music line-up of three bands, and a DJ to help unwind after a long day in the surf. There will also be delicious food and a bar for all over 18s to enjoy.
