PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS – A collaborative effort between New Horizons residents and crime fighters led to the arrest of an alleged cable thief last week.
Operational officer of New Horizons Taakmag, a crime-fighting group in this community, Clemet Titus, said that residents reported an incident of cable theft in progress just before 21:00 on Friday evening.
"Within seconds, crime fighting stakeholders, including police, were alerted and responded to the scene," Titus said.
When they arrived, the suspect fled the scene on foot and a chase ensued. One of the New Horizons Taakmag members managed to chase the suspect down and caught him in a nearby street.
"The suspect was still in possession of the tools he had allegedly used to cut the cable."
The suspect was taken into police custody.
"This collaboration between community crime-fighting stakeholders is the success within the community of New Horizons.
"The ongoing cable theft affects our lives and businesses on a daily basis. Our communities are already affected by load-shedding and cannot afford to be without electricity for long hours." Local police confirmed the arrest.
