Update
SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Following further investigations into the mysterious death of a man found near the Sedgefield Lagoon mouth last week, police have now ruled the death a murder.
The body of a man was found near the lagoon mouth last Monday, 10 July, in an early stage of decomposition.
A member of the public who was conducting foot patrols in the area, found the body and alerted police.
At the time police had not yet identified the man, but in the days since, Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies confirmed that he was 61-year-old Johannes le Roux.
"Investigation into the matter indicates that [a member of the public] was walking in the vicinity when he made the discovery and alerted authorities," Spies said. "Police responded to the scene and found the body in an early stage of decomposition concealed under branches."
The cause of death was initially unclear, along with the nature of the incident.
But, an autopsy conducted later in the week brought to light some disturbing details. "It was later established that the victim sustained stab wounds to the back and shoulder as well as head injuries believed to be inflicted with a blunt object before his death," Spies said.
This left police with only one option. "A murder docket was subsequently opened for further police investigation," Spies said, but, "no arrests have been made yet."
The police are calling for information regarding the incident. "We urge the public to come forward with any information which could lead to the arrest of the assailant/s.
"Anyone with information may contact the investigation officer, Sergeant Vusumzi Xokozela, at the Knysna Detective Branch on 044 302 6652 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111."
