KNYSNA NEWS - If you have been stuck at home wondering how the Knysna Estaury wildlife is coping during lockdown, you can rest assured it's doing just fine.
Rangers from the Garden Route National Park's Knysna section along with Knysna manager Megan Taplin paid the estuary a visit yesterday (28 April) to monitor the situation.
"Although we couldn't see how things have changed under the water, we do notice a remarkable difference with the water birds and particularly African black oystercatchers, which are quite vulnerable to disturbance," Taplin said. "We have noticed over the last month and yesterday how bird activity has increased, due to no disturbance by boats, bait collectors and fishers, especially in areas where they are usually disturbed."
Taplin also pointed out that they have had quite a few reports from residents on the estuary as to how fish and bird life has increased.
The estuary's birdlife has enjoyed a resurgence in lockdown.
Birds have returned to some of the islands in the estuary.
Birds have also taken to the water again.
