PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Police confiscated a large amount of dagga and arrested a 27-year-old man during an anti-drug trafficking operation near Plett on Sunday 4 July.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said the bust was the fruit of the recent reintroduction of the rural flying squad along the Garden Route.
During the weekend's operations, officers of the unit were strategically deployed at entry and exit points in the province.
They set up a vehicle checkpoint on the N2 in Plettenberg Bay on Sunday. One of the vehicles which was stopped was a silver Mazda. "A search of the vehicle ensued and officers discovered 2,6kg of dagga stashed among luggage," Spies said. The drugs were positively linked to one of the occupants of the vehicle. The 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with the possession of drugs. He is scheduled to appear in the Plettenberg Bay Magistrate's Court this week.
Spies said that this arrest was part of a wider operation which paid dividends further afield.
On Saturday night at about 21:20, officers pulled over a vehicle en route to Oudtshoorn during lockdown compliance duty on the N9. "Upon searching the vehicle officers found 25kg of dagga. A further search of the vehicle resulted in the confiscation of an undisclosed amount of cash, allegedly proceeds of the illicit drug trade," Spies said. Police arrested the four occupants of the vehicle on charges of dealing in drugs. The suspects are expected to appear in the Oudtshoorn Magistrate's Court this week.
