PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Over Easter weekend, sea rescue volunteers were called out to two incidents where individuals were in trouble along the coast.
Plettenberg Bay's National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) deputy station commander, Laurent Eray, said that just after 15:20 on Saturday 16 April, their crew was activated following reports of a pencil duck having capsized in the Keurbooms River mouth.
The local NSRI jet rib was launched and rescue swimmers responded to the scene. A few private boats in the vicinity also assisted.
"On arrival on the scene we found the boat had been righted and the crew of the casualty boat were not injured and they required no further assistance," Eray said.
The next day, at about 10:40, they were called to assist after two kayakers were reported to be in trouble off-shore of Nature's Valley.
"Our Nature's Valley coast watchers responded to get eyes at the scene while our duty crew launched a sea rescue craft," Eray said.
When they arrived they found the two men had reached shore safely, without sustaining any injuries. "Both men and their kayak had been washed ashore in a set of waves after they were separated from their kayak in the backline."
No further assistance was required and the sea rescue craft returned to base.
