PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - A group of killer whales (Orinus orca) surprised Plettenberg Bay with a visit last Tuesday, 23 February.
They were probably hunting for prey, according to Dr Gwen Penry, marine mammal scientist attached to Nelson Mandela University.
It was only the third time Penry herself had seen killer whales in the bay in her 20 years of research on these creatures, that are recognisable by their black-and-white patterned bodies.
There are no known estimates of the size of the population in South African waters and killer whales are classified as "data deficient".
