PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Plett's "agri flag" is flying high with a local agricultural sector worker having successfully made it to the national round of the Prestige Agricultural Awards 2021.
The town recently shone at the regional round when two workers proved their mettle in the Garden Route Prestige Agricultural Awards.
While most winners were from the George area, Plettenberg Bay's Bianca van der Mescht won the category for middle management while Elroy Kanana took second place in animal production. Both work for JJ van der Schyff en Seun based in Plettenberg Bay.
It is also this farming initiative that produced 2019's SA Toyota National Young Farmer of the Year after winning the Agri Western Cape Agriculture Young Farmer of the Year in May the same year.
Van der Mescht then, with 10 other category winners, made it through to an interview round held in Stellenbosch recently where they were put under the magnifying glass by a judging panel. From there the 11 winners were whittled down to five.
Van der Mescht said she received a personal invitation from Western Cape MEC for agriculture Ivan Meyer to attend the national awards ceremony later this month.
She started working for JJ van der Schyff en Seun in November 2009 and manages the food safety and quality systems for its three companies - JJ van der Schyff en Seun in Plett, Dagbreek Eiers in Humansdorp and its distribution depot in Kraaifontein in Cape Town. She also represents the company in third party FSA audits and handles exports as well as employment equity and BEE.
"I am very excited about this honour. Just knowing that I have been chosen to compete among the best in the industry, is just fantastic," Van der Mescht said.
