KNYSNA NEWS - The Knysna Art Society visited Nico Liebenberg's Pottery studio on Friday 18 August.
It was a delightful experience for all attendees as the renowned ceramicist graciously shared his extensive knowledge and creative journey spanning over 35 years.
Liebenberg captivated the audience by highlighting specific pieces and providing in-depth explanations of the intricate processes involved in their creation.
One concept he expanded on was the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which centers around appreciating the beauty found in imperfection. Liebenberg intentionally incorporates imperfections into some of his works, enhancing their uniqueness and embracing the essence of Wabi-Sabi.

As a versatile artist, he specialises in crafting porcelain, stoneware, and Raku-fired ceramics, blending elements of Anglo-Oriental styles.
Visitors to his showroom can witness firsthand his meticulous attention to detail and pursuit of perfection. Notably, his moon jars stand out as exemplary demonstrations of his craftsmanship.
The showroom also showcases Liebenberg's affinity for traditional Oriental glazes, boasting an array of captivating colours.
From the serene cool greens of Caledon tones to the earthy olive shades of vine ash and the enchanting smoky blues of Chuns, his palette is diverse. Additionally, the brownish-blacks of Tenmokus and the fiery warm copper reds add depth and character to his creations.
Liebenberg achieves these mesmerising hues through a reduction firing process, where oxygen is removed from the glazes within a gas-fueled kiln, resulting in distinct colours which is not attainable through oxidation firings.
Located on the Rheenendal road, Nico Liebenberg's pottery studio is conveniently situated near Totties Sunday Market.
The general public is encouraged to visit his showroom, where his unique pieces are available for purchase. For those unable to visit during the week, Nico also showcases his works every Saturday at the Mosaic Market in Sedgefield.
The Knysna Art Society organises monthly visits to local artists, providing opportunities for members to engage with and gain inspiration from talented individuals within the community.
These visits are typically scheduled for the third Friday of the month. Artists interested in opening their studios to KAS members are encouraged to contact Amanda Louw via WhatsApp at 083 256 1960.
