PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Residents of Pinetrees made a grisly discovery last week when they came across the remains of a baby.
Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said that a preliminary investigation suggested that a stray dog emerged from the bushes near Pinetrees at about 15:00 on 19 September, carrying what was believed to be the head of a newborn or stillborn baby.
The remains were already in an advanced state of decomposition.
"Police were contacted and it was found that it was indeed the head of a baby," Pojie said. "A police forensics expert was contacted to conduct their investigation. The [baby's] head and intestines were removed by forensic pathology."
A body fluid dog from the Garden Route dog unit was dispatched to the scene, but no traces could be found to establish the origins of remains that were discovered.
Police have opened an inquest docket and the matter is being investigated.
Pojie appealed to the public to come forward with information that could assist them in the matter. The Plettenberg Bay police or Crime Stop can be contacted on 08600 10111.
