SEDGEFIELD NEWS - Knysna Municipality will be conducting works at Myoli Beach in Sedgefield from 12 to 16 September.
According to Executive Deputy Mayor and chairperson of the planning, economic development and tourism committee, Alberto Marbi, these works include the removal of sand from the parking area and maintenance to the beach access point.
"The primary dune at Myoli beach, adjacent to the parking area and restaurant, is prone to blow-outs," Marbi explained in a press release earlier this week.
"The sand that accumulates in the parking area can obstruct access to the beach for not only the public, but rescue vehicles of organisations like the National Sea Rescue Institute.
He asked members of the public to avoid the Myoli Beach area during working hours and to rather use the alternative access points to the beach along Claude Urban and Dover drives until the works have been completed.
He also urged the public to adhere to all signage and relevant instructions for their own safety.
Works are taking place in accordance with the Knysna Municipality Myoli Beach Access Maintenance Management Plan, as approved by provincial government and reviewed by South African National Parks (SANParks) and Eco Route Environmental Consultancy.
These local consultants also facilitated a public participation process attended by local business owners, residents and other relevant stakeholders including SANParks. An environmental officer is on site to monitor progress and ensure compliance with the plan.
"Clearing the sand is a short-term solution to an immediate problem, and we are working in close partnership with the owners of the restaurant as these regular blow-outs and the associated clean-up activities impact their business," Marbi explained.
"We are also working on a long-term solution in terms of stabilising and rehabilitating the dune. This process is already underway and makes use of locally sourced materials to naturally stabilise the dune according to their growth cycles."
Marbi said that our beaches are not only beautiful recreation areas enjoyed by residents and thousands of visitors, but also important ecological environments that must be protected and maintained.
"These works at Myoli Beach form part of our focus on good coastal management practices. We apologise for the temporary inconvenience and appreciate the public's patience while we work to conserve our natural heritage." he said.
