KNYSNA NEWS - After numerous complaints from Knysna residents that the company installing fibre-optic is leaving streets and trenches not filled correctly, the municipality is stepping in.
In a press statement last week, Acting Knysna Municipal Manager Dawid Adonis confirmed that the municipality had acted on numerous complaints regarding the state the existing infrastructure has been left in by some fibre-optic installation companies.
"Complaints have ranged from damage to residential driveways and other areas to municipal infrastructure like sidewalks. Together with the Director: Infrastructure and Manager Legal Services, I have engaged with all installation companies and their subcontractors to resolve these issues. All parties were reminded that they are bound to keep to the conditions of their way leave permits.
"Failure to comply will result in works being suspended and the withdrawal of work permits," he said.
Adonis said permits clearly state that, among other responsibilities:
- The applicant remains responsible and liable for the site during the exploration works and for the repairs up to 12 months after completion;
- All surfaces must be reinstated to their original standard or better; and
- The existing soils and cover materials must be removed in the layers as found on site and must be replaced and compacted to in-site conditions.
"We take complaints from our residents very seriously, and have acted on them regarding this issue. We shall continue to monitor the situation and will not hesitate to take any steps necessary to ensure that all conditions of works are adhered to.
"The installation of this infrastructure is sure to keep the greater Knysna area on trend with current technological developments, building towards the reality of an inclusive, innovative, inspired Knysna," he said.
