KNYSNA NEWS - A mother and her baby were killed in a hit-and-run incident on the N2 at Nekkies at the past weekend.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the incident occurred at 01:20 on Sunday 10 October. "Information available indicates that the mother and the victim crossed the road when they were hit by a vehicle," he said.
"The four-month-old boy sustained multiple injuries and was later declared dead by paramedics on the scene."
His mother (19) sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. After being transferred to George from the Knysna Provincial Hospital for further medical care, she died later in the day on Sunday 10 October.
"Members of the rural flying squad tracked down a red Volkswagen Golf, believed to be involved in the incident, at Khayalethu," Spies explained.
"The police arrested a 25-year-old driver in connection with the case later on Sunday. He appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Monday 11 October."
The vehicle was also seized.
According to Spies the suspect was released on R3 000 bail following his court appearance on Monday.
"The matter was postponed to 24 November for further investigation."
