KNYSNA NEWS - After a harrowing three weeks battling the coronavirus, Knysna Ward 10 councillor Peter Myers and his wife Candace are back on their feet.
They contracted Covid-19 while on a recent trip abroad where they attended their godson's wedding in Switzerland and thereafter went sightseeing in Prague and Vienna.
The couple, who arrived back home on 13 March, said they immediately went into self-isolation as a precautionary measure. It was not long after their arrival that the two started showing symptoms of the virus and later tests confirmed the worst.
Candace said the symptoms included horrific fever and body aches and by day nine, Peter developed a chest infection and found it very difficult to breathe.
Over the past week, however, the two reported that they have recovered fully and are back in their daily routine.
"I have cleaned my pantry, cooked some food and cleaned the house," Candace said.
Although they have not yet been tested to confirm that they are negative, Candace said they are "feeling 100%". "We are obviously still in quarantine in our home with the rest of the country and therefore don't feel the need to retest just yet."
The couple had been confined to their room to protect their 12-year-old daughter, as well as Candace's brother who had picked them up at the airport and has remained isolated with them since. Neither of them have shown any symptoms.
They have decided to come out of their room and move through their home following their recovery. "The first thing we did was hug our daughter. She is, however, still a bit skittish and keeps her distance," said Candace.
She said the ordeal has been very stressful on their young daughter. "You can see that she has taken strain. Obviously when you see your parents are ill and you hear all the horrible stories about the virus, you fear for their lives."
Candace said both of them were very healthy people before the virus struck. "Peter was more heavily affected due to his underlying asthma, but also recovered fully."
While many people have been taking the isolation hard, Candace said, she has been enjoying the "peace and quiet". "I think in a few days that might change. I do miss walking the dogs and being with friends."
