According to Gerrit Muller of Niqua Security, who was on the scene with the police, some of the people fighting carried knives as they ran across the road to fight.
Eyewitnesses contacted the Knysna-Plett Herald to report the 'gang fight' and Muller's efforts alongside the police to control it. In turn, the newspaper contacted Muller.
The Knysna-Plett Herald is still awaiting confirmation from SAPS about the details of this incident and exactly where the violence happened, but initially it was stated in this story that the fight happened near Zanzibar night club, but general manager, Jaco Aucamp, was adamant that Zanzibar Knysna “was no in way involved in the drama in Main Road.”
Aucamp said in a written statement to the Knysna-Plett Herald on Monday, September 14, “the fight broke out in front of Canon on the corner of memorial square, none of Zanzibar’s patrons were involved in the situation that arose and thirdly the new management of Zanzibar Knysna has taken many steps to eradicate our name from the fighting scene that was at one point the norm here.”
“Having our name published in this article that has nothing to do with Zanzibar Knysna, eventually leads to negative publicity and tarnishes a name that we have worked timeously to improve,” said Aucamp, who felt strongly that the name of his establishment had been tarnished by this initial report especially since he had not been asked to comment.
