KNYSNA NEWS - While many residents may be looking forward to taking time off this festive season, Knysna Executive Mayor Elrick van Aswegen reminded everyone that the coronavirus will not be going on holiday.
In a statement on Monday, Van Aswegen called on Knysna residents to remain vigilant in curbing the spread of Covid-19 this holiday season.
"The Garden Route is experiencing an unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases and Knysna is no exception, with a rise in positive cases and hospitalisations," he said, adding that his own municipality has increasingly fallen prey to the virus.
"Covid-19 is affecting both councillors and administrative staff and we must make difficult decisions when considering how to deal with the internal and external implications of the situation," he said.
As of 6 December, Knysna Municipality had 23 active cases among its staff with 73 people in isolation and eight more awaiting their test results. One person had succumbed to the virus, but 97 had already recovered.
Office arrangements
"In August, Council resolved that all municipal employees must return to their physical places of work. We must remain vigilant, responsible and do everything in our power to prevent and mitigate the spread of this virus," he said.
According to Van Aswegen the municipality will have all its meetings online, all employees with proper tools of trade will work from home, employees with comorbidities and those older than 60 years will work from home, essential services will be placed on a shift system, public participation meetings will be suspended, essential hygiene products are provided to all staff and wearing of masks at work will be strictly enforced.
"We will also be implementing measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus within our communities. Where appropriate we will be closing certain public facilities. Law enforcement efforts will be increased in hotspots and businesses will be inspected," he said.
The municipality will continue spreading communication on how to prevent the spread within communities.
Jolly but vigilant
"We have all been struggling for a long time, but now is the time to stay strong. The season is the time to be jolly, but it is also the time to be vigilant. We cannot let all of our hard work go to waste. We must work together to contain this virus.
"Avoid confined spaces, close contact and crowded areas. Wash and sanitise your hands regularly. Wear your mask properly. If you are meeting with friends or family, do so in the festive fresh air," he said.
Van Aswegen said that, while the greater Knysna municipal area has embarked on a large-scale campaign to remind travellers that "we are open", everybody must remain vigilant.
"Besides locals enjoying our beautiful town during the summer season, the area is expecting an influx of local and domestic tourists. Please be careful and maintain a safe distance from each other. Refrain from shaking hands, hugging one another and kissing family members," said Van Aswegen.
