SEDGEFIELD NEWS - During a vehicle checkpoint conducted outside Sedgefield last week, police seized an unlicenced firearm and arrested a 57-year-old man.
At about 19:40 on Wednesday 20 July, members of the Knysna Crime Prevention unit stopped a Toyota Avanza at the checkpoint.
According to Southern Cape police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, the vehicle was searched and a 9mm firearm with ammunition was found behind the driver's seat.
"The police subsequently arrested the driver. A second occupant of the vehicle fled the scene on foot. He is still at large," he said.
The suspect remains in police custody and appeared in the Knysna Magistrate's Court on Thursday 21 July on a charge of possession of unlicenced firearm and ammunition.
Oudtshoorn arrests
On Sunday 17 July, at about 20:20, members of the Rural Flying Squad and Eden Crime Combatting Team who were deployed on the N12 outside Oudtshoorn, pulled over a vehicle.
"Upon searching the vehicle they found 100 Mandrax tablets concealed under the passenger seat," Spies said. "The members confiscated the drugs and arrested four suspects, two women and two men aged between 23 and 34, on charges of dealing in drugs."
Later the same evening, the team also arrested a 23-year-old woman on a charge of possession of drugs after 112g of tik was found in the vehicle she was travelling in. Western Cape police management applauded the team for their efforts as they continue to rid communities of firearms and drugs that contribute to serious crime reported in this region..
