In a recent incident, a 36-year-old male driver of a blue Volkswagen Fox endangered his own life and that of another driver, Siyanda Fukwena, when his car collided with Fukwena’s white Toyota Camry on Friday, January 28 in Uniondale Road, Nekkies.
Fortunately both men escaped the accident unharmed.
The suspect was apprehended at the scene and Constable Chris Spies, SAPS media liaison officer confirmed that case of driving under the influence of alcohol had been opened against the driver of the VW.
It is alleged that he was driving at an excessively high speed when he apparently lost control of his vehicle and collided head-on with the Toyota.
Sandile Mila, reverend at St Pauls and St Pieters in Khayalethu and Greenfield, related his account of the accident: "Fukwena is from Oudtshoorn and he came to Knysna for a funeral, which had taken place on Saturday. He needed a place to stay and I had arranged for him to stay at Councilor Nompumlelo Koti’s house. We were on our way to Koti’s house when the accident occurred. I was driving with my family in front of Fukwena. Luckily the drunk driver missed my car. Unfortunately he collided head-on with Fukwena’s car behind me."
Mila continued: "Fukwena and I went to see the suspect on Saturday morning at the Knysna Police Station where he was in custody. Fukwena and the suspect agreed that the suspect would pay or repair all the damages to Fukwena’s car and in return Fukwena would not open a case against him. We left the police station and were later told that the suspect was released on bail of R500 that afternoon."
Since the result of a blood test was still being awaited from a forensic laboratory in Cape Town, the suspect’s blood-alcohol level was not known at the time of going to press.
The cause of the accident will be known after the conclusion of this investigation, which the Knysna Detective Branch is currently probing.
