KNYSNA NEWS – As a manner of paying it forward after the town received so much help during the Knysna Fires in 2017, Knysna Primary School (KPS) last week handed over a large donation to Gift of the Givers.
The donation is meant to assist in efforts to deal with the aftermath of the floods that devastated large parts of the province last month.
Every month, KPS chooses a particular value by which they encourage their learners and staff to live for that month, a value that embodies what they believe in as a school.
For the month of April the school chose the value of compassion and thought it fitting to live this out by assisting those in need.
"With the flooding in KwaZulu-Natal and the schools that are really struggling in mind, we organised a civvies day where children could make a voluntary donation to the cause of helping those in KwaZulu-Natal," explained Saskia Verschoor, member of the KPS school governing body.
"We and the town received so much help in 2017 during the fires that we saw it only fit for us to reach out and help those in the way we were helped." The school advertised the campaign on social media and through all of their efforts raise just under R17 500.
"The SGB then decided to add a small amount to get the total donation to R20 000 that we will be handing over to Gift of the Givers," Verschoor indicated.
The donation was handed over to Gift of the Givers' Southern Cape coordinator Mario Ferreira on Thursday 12 May. "We are extremely grateful for this donation, and it will go a long way to assisting our efforts in KZN," Ferriera said.
