KNYSNA NEWS – Fed up with the sorely lacking state of service delivery and what they called a lack of transparency in local decision-making processes, residents of Knysna marched through town on Thursday morning, 29 February, urging the mayor and municipal manager to resign.
Led by the DA, the protest highlighted the numerous issues that have plagued the town in recent times, such as the ongoing water shortages and waste management issues.
The protesters gathered in Spring Street, from where they marched to the CBD and along Main Road, ending at the municipal building in Queen Street, where they handed over a memorandum.
The determined marchers were carrying placards demanding accountability and making their message clear: the community will no longer tolerate subpar governance and will actively work toward securing better leadership for the town.
“The memorandum demanding their resignation was handed over to Municipal Manager Ombali Sebola, whose appointment is subject to judicial review by the DA in the Western Cape High Court,’ said DA Councillor Jason White. “Basic service delivery has all but collapsed under this uncaring coalition government, and the municipality is unable to meet its financial commitments.”
The municipality has to date not made any public comment or reacted to the memorandum.
However, a special council meeting was held on Friday 1 March to discuss the service delivery issues and decide on a way forward.
