KNYSNA NEWS - The fourth edition of the Eden Kite Festival was presented on an almost too windy Sunday afternoon on 21 October at the Mosaic Village in Sedgefield.
Droves of people from all over the Garden Route enjoyed the festival flair as the Mosaic Village was a hub of activity – with music in the background, tons of food and drink stalls and all-round family entertainment.
Many kinds of imaginative kites were on display, such as huge dragons albeit not the fire-breathing type. Those types were mostly just on display as they were tied to the ground.
But while some boasted with mega kites, other more conservative enthusiasts struggled with cross winds to get their kites up against the blue sky.
But persistence and perseverance paid off and eventually those struggling managed to fly their kites – much to the delight of the onlooking crowd who applauded every time a kite didn't crash to the ground.
There were also other activities taking place, such as a slow-biking competition, some fun boere sports and a wind-power contest.
Masithandane initiated the kite festival as a fundraising event. This NPO has far-reaching programmes to assist all levels of need in the local community and beyond, into the rural areas surrounding Sedgefield.
In this instance the aim is to provide transport, bursaries and school-related items to enable Grade 8 children and above to attend secondary schools in Knysna and George because Sedgefield doesn't have a high school.
