KNYSNA NEWS - The community of Judah Square showed their commitment to preserving nature when they dove head-first into a clean-up of the Bongani river in Khayalethu on Friday 6 October.
The clean-up, facilitated by Knysna Municipality - partnering with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEADP) - commemorated the start of National Marine Week.
The Judah Square community showed up in their numbers and it was especially heartening to see the keen participation of the youth, who collected a significant amount of rubbish in the area, encouraging the youth in general to actively participate in environmental conservation.
The objective of the clean-up was to protect the rivers that are the lifeblood of our oceans and thus help make a positive impact on our marine ecosystems.
This initiative started in 2002 when the community of Judah Square set about on a clean-up mission along the Bongani River, giving birth to the Khayalethu Nature Reserve, a sanctuary that safeguards our cherished water source.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment provided bags, gloves and other essential tools for the clean-up, while DEADP supplied refreshments to the participants after their hard work.
The Judah Square community came through in their numbers for the Bongani River clean-up.
The Bongani River clean-up saw many youths helping to clean up the river area.
