KNYSNA NEWS - Former sailors who have traded their 'big boats' for smaller, radio-controlled versions, have been making waves out on the water.
The Knysna Radio Sailing Bouys are a group of ex-dinghy or keel boat sailors that have retired from the big boats and switched their hand to radio-controlled sailing.
They sail three classes of yachts in and around the Knysna estuary - Laser (international), Shipmate or R36 (South African design and build) and the new range, the Dragon Flite 95 (international design and build).
Their primary venues are the Leisure Isle Boat Club and Belvidere jetties. The group is also affiliated with the Garden Route Radio Sailing Club, and sails in areas such as Hartenbos and Fairy Knowe on the Touws River in Wilderness.
Their season kicked off with a morning's sail on the Goukamma River.
Twelve races were sailed in a light southerly wind with five Dragon Flite 95s, and two Lasers on the water. First place went to George Winter, second place to Clive Watson, and third to Wally Maritz.
Some of the types of the yachts raced.
