PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements Tertuis Simmers, along with national Minister of Human Settlements, Mmamoloko Kubayi, and Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete, will visit Bitou on Tuesday 18 January to check up on progress with the Qolweni housing project.
It forms part of a two-day visit to various housing sites in the province.
The engagement, which will cover parts of the Garden Route District and the City of Cape Town, will include presentations by relevant senior provincial and municipal officials to the executive.
“Project sites will be visited to ascertain progress and in some instances title deeds will be handed over. Bricklaying ceremonies of new projects will also be conducted,” Simmers said.
“I am looking forward to welcoming both the national minister and her deputy to our province, so that we can showcase how we’re addressing the housing needs of our people.
We will particularly use this engagement to present some of our plans around creating more affordable housing opportunities for the people of our province, and how the national department can assist in accelerating our programme.”
The Qolweni housing project is on track to be completed early this year after seeing major progress since it was handed over to the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements in June last year.
The lack of progress on the project had been a bone of contention for almost two years, leading to violent riots by unhappy residents. Construction of the provincially funded R33,5-million project by the Bitou Municipality didn't come off the ground and the project was handed over to the Department of Human Settlements.
Construction commenced in the first week of September.
