KNYSNA NEWS - One of the many buildings that suffered damage during the fires was that of Knysna High School’s (KHS) hostel, Huis Volhard.
Not only was the entire top floor of the hostel razed, but according to principal Mark Mosdell, they also had to deal with smoke, heat and water damage throughout the rest of the building, as well as asbestos contamination.
The learners living in Huis Volhard have had to deal with a lot but, said Mosdell, they are all back at school.
Some of the hostel students are staying in the temporary hostel situated across the street from the school, in Fichat Street, while others are making use of lift clubs and other means to get to school.
A multi-disciplinary task team has been to the site on several occasions and is in the process of finalising a proposal for the education department, he said.
At this point, Mosdell added, the school is still waiting for the insurance company to finalise the claim.
Governing body chair René Bruwer said the concern and generosity shown to the school have been humbling. "We would also like to extend heartfelt thanks to the principal, who continues to put the learners and their interests first.”
Golf day
To cover some of the school's extra expenses after the fires, they are holding a golf day.
“We need players, prizes and sponsors for holes,” said Bruwer.
The golf day will be held on Sunday 24 September at the Knysna golf club with a “shotgun” start at 09:30. Entrance is R250 for adults and R150 for juniors.
