At two events that celebrated the joy of culture and diversity in a community "where everyone counts", the community of Keurhoek was inspired to reach out and commit to the wellbeing of the town and all its residents.
The youth and the elderly are the two very important pillars that strengthen and build our community, says Magda Williams, local ward councillor.
At a function fore the elderly more than 60 elderly members of this community were invited to share in festivities as Heritage Day coincided with the 21st anniversary of the local Mandalay Taxi Service. The owners, Manda and Hansie Mowers want to give back to this community who has supported them for so many years by hosting a monthly event where the elderly are celebrated. Hansie Mowers says the wisdom and knowledge that the elderly have gained through physical work and a hard life is "God's grace".
Williams says the community are proud of its elderly and wants to include them in all activities. "With the help of the Mowers, we will do more to remind them of their value to this community," says Williams. The oldest Rheenendal resident, Katriena Brinkhuis who will turn 100 in January 2014, was among the many old people, some in wheelchairs, who were welcomed to the festive table, with children assisting those residents with walking difficulties.
On the sport field, Rheenendal's youth gathered to celebrate. While some played soccer, three teams showed off their culinary skills in a potjiekos competition hosted by the Knysna Municipality and organised by the youth developer, Devoline Koopman. Koopman says this competition will become an annual event. Families gathered around the competitors, cheering them on and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Geneva Bothes of Knysna, Councillor Williams, potjiekos champion Ockie Spies and Homtini Guest Farm manager John Martin judged the competition.
Spies did not want to give away all his potjiekos secrets but shared that a good 'potjie' needs meat. His advice to potjiekos chefs is to take their time time and to put love into the pot. Spies says his best 'potjies' were mostly unexpected. A passion for good food is the magic ingredient. The winners of the competition, Team Spring Veg, will be treated to a buffet Sunday lunch at Tottie's Country Kitchen and the Knysna Municipality will give certificates to the runner-up teams.
