PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Plett community once again stepped up in a big way to assist those in need after about 140 people were affected by a fire that swept through several homes in Qolweni.
The fire broke out on Wednesday 16 November. It was contained by Bitou firefighters and volunteers, limiting the destruction to 42 homes.
The Bitou municipal communications team said that the cause of the fire is not yet known.
Following the devastation, local Good Samaritans sent out a plea for donations to assist the families who had suffered losses.
Throughout the night and the next morning locals dropped off goods - from clothing and toiletries to bedding and other necessities - at the Native Roots Shelter in Marine Way.
Large bags filled to the brim with goods for each family were distributed among the affected families.
The Qolweni and Bossiesgif communities have been devastated by several fires over the past few months that seems to have become a regular occurrence, especially in the winter months when heating sources often lead to fires.

Thanks to generous donations from Plett residents, bags full of essential items could be distributed to the affected families.
