KNYSNA NEWS - This Thursday, 24 November, the last general meeting of the Knysna U3A for 2022 promises to be very special as Dr Charles Helm from Canada will be presenting his latest information about the wealth of trace fossils that lie on local beaches.
He has been able to involve local residents to keep an eye on the changing conditions of the beaches as he was unable to do so during the Covid-19-related travel restrictions.
His presentation is expected to be very topical, especially as these latest discoveries are the final touches to his PhD. "There will be a presentation of slides showcasing Pleistocene vertebrate track sites along our coast," said Judy Dixon of the Knysna U3A.
"Basic skills in recognising fossil tracks will be covered. 'Citizen science' will be encouraged, ie, interested residents reporting finds. The global importance of our coastline and the need to preserve the sites where possible will be discussed. Included will be highlights of the 2022 field work, which includes the discovery of three new hominin track sites."
The meeting will take place in the Knysna Kerk in Fichat Street and the doors open at 09:00 when tea, coffee and Christmas fare will be served.
Helm's presentation will start at 10:00. All are welcome to attend.
