PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Greenwood Bay College had to evacuate its learners and staff off the premises this morning after parts of the school as well as access roads were flooded due to the torrential rains in the region.
According to Leigh Gips, the school’s head of marketing, only parts of the school are flooded, but they had to evacuate learners and staff as there was the risk that vehicles would not be able get through the water collecting around the school.
The school is situated on the bank of the Piesang River in Plettenberg Bay, which is where the vast majority of the floodwater stemmed from.
There had been one vehicle, a Chevrolet Spark that had gotten stuck, while it was trying to get through the water at the school.
“Luckily our principal was able to help lift and push the car out of the ditch it had driven into, which couldn’t be seen because of all the water,” Gips said. No other vehicles had gotten stuck, and everyone – bar a few staff who have remained at the school – was evacuated safely.
Roads and some parts of the premises have flooded.
A Chevrolet Spark can be seen stuck in the distance after running into a ditch that couldn't be seen through the water.
