GARDEN ROUTE DISTRICT NEWS - It was confirmed on Wednesday 17 June that the Garden Route District is classified as a hotspot.
This means the district has more than 5 active cases per 100 000 population. The Garden Route currently has 66 per 100 000 population.
Community Testing and Screening
The approach to active Covid-19 case finding within the rural areas remain that of community testing and screening with a focus on people > 55 years, the vulnerable and those of high risk (people with co-morbidities)
“We have to date screened 111 491 people and referred 615 for testing as part of community screening and testing. Most of the communities have been screened, but community health workers will continue to do screenings as part of their daily visits to households”, said District Manager, Mr Zee Brickles.

Hospitalisation
There are currently 15 patients admitted in public hospitals with 2 in ICU.
Isolation and quarantine
Isolation facilities are for patients with mild to moderate symptoms where they can recover from COVID-19 (usually 14 days) and quarantine facilities are for those awaiting test results.
PetroSA(West Camp) is currently the only activated isolation and quarantine facility in the Garden Route. More facilities will be announced, if and when the need arises or capacity is exceeded at PetroSA. We currently have 22 people in isolation and quarantine. Lockdown Level 3 services
At present all public hospitals are performing surgery for emergency and urgent cases only where patients cannot wait more than 3 months(e.g for cancer surgery).
Facilities across the Province have restructured their service package as of end May.
• All non-urgent surgery has been postponed.
• All Outpatient Department visits has been rescheduled for a later date except high-risk antenatal clinic, dialysis treatment (George Hospital) and emergency cancer treatment.
• No visitation is allowed during lockdown except by special arrangement with individual hospital management.
Primary Healthcare "Although we urge patients to only visit their nearest clinic for essential services we remind parents and caregivers that services such as immunisations are still rendered. It is important to attend all your confirmed appointments. Services such as women’s health(family planning, antenatal and post-natal care), child health(immunisations) and TB, are still rendered. Stable chronic care patients must collect their chronic medicine at the chronic off-sites. “should you require guidance or advice around your current treatment or scheduled appointment, please contact your clinic/hospital."
