KNYSNA NEWS – A Knysna woman's life was turned on its head on the evening of Sunday 16 May when her house at The Point burnt down. Two dogs died in the blaze.
The fire at the house on The Point, situated some 3km out of Knysna towards Sedgefield, is believed to have started around 19:30.
According to Knysna Municipality spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhoudt, the Knysna Fire and Rescue Department was alerted about the fire at about 19:45. "Two major pumpers and two water tankers were dispatched to attend to the fire," he confirmed.
Bezuidenhoudt said that when the fire services arrived on the scene they noticed that it was just the one house/structure that had caught fire. As soon as they arrived, fire crews set out extinguishing the fire.
"The blaze was contained within the first hour. Mopping up continued until 22:50," Bezuidenhoudt said. The owner was the only person inside the house. While the value of the damage is not known, the extent of the damage was restricted to the house.
"The structure was destroyed, but the garage and vehicle were saved," Bezuidenhoudt said. There had been gas bottles in the home, but fortunately none of these exploded during the fire. The owner of the house was also fortunate to escape the blaze without serious injury.
Sadly, the same was not the case for her furry friends. "The owner injured her hand and unfortunately two dogs died," Bezuidenhoudt clarified.
He said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
