PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - The Plettenberg Bay Crime Prevention Association (PBCPA) urges authorities to find a permanent solution to the problems caused by vagrants in Plett. This comes after a raid was carried out on alleged drug addicts sleeping on private properties and in public bathrooms.
PBCPA chair Sally Turner said that the raid was carried out on Thursday 28 October and was a combined operation by Bitou law enforcement, PBCPA patrollers and Plett Rapid Response members.
She said vagrants sleeping under benches and boardwalks on beachfronts, in bushes at Poortjies, The Wedge and town centre have been an ongoing and unresolved issue for a long time. "It is most certainly a serious security issue for locals and visitors alike. This needs to be addressed. Some of these sites are filthy and are a huge health risk," Turner said.
She added that local authorities need to take immediate action and find a permanent solution.
"The current sporadic clean-outs have no effect whatsoever. There must be continuous routine inspections on the known vagrant sleepover sites. The sad part is that many of the addicts sleeping in abandoned buildings etc. have family members in Bitou, but choose to sleep in town in such dire circumstances."
The PBCPA intends to keep pushing and following up with local authorities to do regular routine clean-up operations.
"Thanks to Bitou MLE for their professional assistance," said Turner.
