PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Residents have been complaining to Bitou Municipality for seven weeks about a garbage bin on a dune on the Blue Flag beach, Lookout, near the lagoon. Complaints include that the refuse is not collected for weeks on end, which leads to overflowing rubbish and passers-by piling their rubbish around the bin on the beach.
This has sparked fears of pollution and a danger to marine animals like birds.
Municipal spokesperson James Sijama confirmed that the matter is receiving the necessary attention from the responsible municipal department, in this case Community Services, which includes beaches.
"There are also measures in place to prevent this from happening again. Nature conservation (authorities) and the municipality will be keeping an eye on it and share responsibility," he said.
