The elimination rounds on Sunday, May 13, saw over 65 entrants ranging from as young as four years of age to a 91-year-old adult. After ten rounds, 24 entrants with the fastest times were invited back for the practice rounds on Monday, May 14.
Rearing to go in the Slot Car Challenge on Wednesday, May 16, the 24 finalists raced three heats of six entrants, racing two minute time slots in six different lanes.
The top six had a final heat with Keagan Hartslief coming first, Claire Mc Cartney second, Bianca Botha third, Neil Conradie fourth, Nicky Ferreira fifth and Julian Bunge sixth. The dads and adults had a close race with a number of thrills and spills, Gary Hodgkinson first, Keith Mould second, Dieter Rangs third, Morne Botha fourth, Roelf Lampbrecht fifth and Alton Bunge sixth. The more experienced club members had a challenging race with the equally matched cars, Kevin Laughton first, Nicholas Spilsbury second, Dudley Till third, Keagan Till fourth, James Whitehead fifth and Camron Carstens sixth.
Endurance race
A very close two hour endurance challenge was also held between the Plettenberg Bay and Knysna Slot Car Clubs on Tuesday, May 15. This was a battle between six equally strong teams of both juniors and seniors and a mixed team.
The Renault Megane slot cars were put through their paces completing over 852 laps. Knysna Champs (Gary, Kevin , Nicholas and Dirk ) won the challenge with 852.80 laps, closely followed by The Speedsters (Nito, Camron, Liam and Kaz) with 848.13 laps. Third was Plett A Team (Anthony, Christian, Leon and Gary White) with 842.91 laps. Fourth was Team Scruff (Leon, Jesse, Quinto and Gary H) with 824.74 laps , fifth The Plett Oldies (Steve, Graeme, Tony and James) with 802.35 and sixth Plett Juniors ( Bev, James, Dudley and Keagan ) with 787.87 laps.
The Knysna Slot Car Club is open on Monday evenings from 19:00 for practice and Thursday evenings for racing. Entrance fee R30 which includes use of a club car and controller. Any enquiries contact Gary Laughton (chairman) on 083 277 3434.
