PLETTENBERG BAY NEWS - Sea rescue volunteers and an adventure-loving doctor saved the day for a woman who experienced a medical issue on a kayaking adventure in Storms River last week.
Oyster Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station commander Lodewyk van Rensburg said the Storms River duty crew were activated after receiving reports from off-duty volunteers, who are also guides with local tourism operator Untouched Adventures, that a 32-year-old Belgian tourist was suffering "a medical complaint" during an Untouched Adventures river kayaking trip.
They were about 2km upriver from the Storms River Mouth in the Tsitsikamma area when the woman sounded the alarm.
Van Rensburg said the guides immediately initiated medical help under the watchful eye of the above-mentioned doctor, who was also on the kayaking trip.
The guides also requested the NSRI duty crew's assistance, who launched the NSRI Storms River rescue craft and activated an ambulance. "Private care ambulance services were activated while the NSRI duty crew reached them on the scene," Van Rensburg said.
The patient, accompanied by the doctor on the trip, was brought to the slipway at the Storms River Mouth aboard the sea rescue craft where they were met by the ambulance and paramedics.
The patient was transported to hospital by ambulance in a stable condition for further medical care.
