KNYSNA NEWS & VIDEO - A leading Knysna security company Allsound have warned the public they are ‘seeing more and more incidents of card swapping at ATMs.’
According to the company, there are three modus operandi currently seen in Knysna.
“The suspects either call you back claiming their transaction jammed and ask you to re-enter your card and pin or they interfere while you are busy (sometimes posing as bank staff) and also posing as parking attendants telling people that they need to pay for their parking at the ATM.”
Further warning is that, “these are professionals and mostly well-dressed. Without you realising it your card is swapped out for another and they make off with your card and pin.
"Within minutes cash is withdrawn from a nearby ATM.”

Below are some tips that can help protect you and visitors to town:
- Be aware of your surroundings and loiterers when using an ATM
- Do not allow anyone access to your secret pin (cover the keypad while typing in your pin)
- Never accept help from a stranger at an ATM and stand as close to the ATM as you can.
- If someone does call you back and insists that you enter your card again, inform them that you will contact the police to assist you (watch how fast they leave)
- Keep your cash withdrawal limit to a minimum
- Save your banks’ call centre number on your phone. Therefore, if your card is lost or stolen you can immediately block your account from being accessed
If you are approached by unknown persons, feel free to use your harshest tone and tell them to back off.
